Friday, May 24, 2019 is Don’t Fry Day to raise awareness of sun safety and skin protection.
Dr. Greg Simpson of University Dermatology Associates answered some questions on how to optimize protection against the sun all year.
Q: What should people look for when choosing sunscreen?
Dr. Simpson: Broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection is very important. An SPF of 30 or greater is sufficient (preferably water-resistant) and remember to reapply every 2 hours. Although a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 can offer protection from sunburn, it does not block all of the sun’s damaging rays. To more fully protect yourself, avoid peak hours of sun exposure, opt for shaded areas, and wear a long-sleeved shirt, pants, wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. For sensitive skin, look for zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to provide both UVA and UVB protection.
Should sunscreen be applied under clothing?
Dr. Simpson: Yes, or alternatively UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) protective clothing.
Is it okay to use tanning beds? What are alternatives?
Dr. Simpson: No, they have known carcinogenic effects. Use sunless tanning sprays as an alternative.
Are any type of sunglasses ok? Or are specific ones better for sun protection?
Dr. Simpson: Those designated for 100% UV protection, covering both UVA/UVB rays.
